We’ve all heard that phrase before – “Communication is key”. It is key in so many aspects of our lives, your personal relationships, with family and at work. But how does it apply to your wedding? More specifically, your reception?
When I MC and DJ a wedding, or any event for that matter, I am very big on communication. Not only in the initial meeting and follow-up planning meetings, but on that day, at the reception I make it a point to communicate with your wedding planner, photographer, videographer and maitre d’ (or head waiter) throughout the night.
Before every speech, or special moment, I check with the maitre d’ to make sure I have enough time to do what is scheduled, or to know if I should wait a few more minutes. Then I give a heads up to the photographer and videographer so they can get ready. I also bring extra copies of the customized reception schedule I planned with the bride and groom to the photographer, videographer and head waiter, even if they have their own. It makes it that much clearer what to expect during the reception.
I also like to take it a step further and I give a two-minute “warning” to whomever is up next, for example the best man for a toast, or the parents of the bride for a speech, or of course the bride and groom before their first dance.
By communicating with everyone involved before I make the announcement, everyone is ready to go, and no one is caught by surprise.
Many venues around Montreal have great maitre d’s and know that communication with the DJ is very important. We have a quick discussion before the reception starts about the receptions plan and flow, so we are both on the same page before we even begin.
As the DJ/MC you are the one who controls the flow of the night. It is important to create a team mentality between the venue, all the vendors and myself. By keeping the lines of communication open throughout the night, we all achieve the goal – taking that wedding up to the next level and making the bride and groom happy!
